NYSBA to Host Webinar on Mobile Sports Betting and Prediction Markets

The New York State Bar Association will host a free online webinar on August 17 to discuss the current state of mobile sports betting and prediction markets. The session will also address the risks of problem gambling and available support resources.

Event Details and Agenda

Titled "The New Gambling Landscape: Mobile Sports Betting and Prediction Markets," the one-hour session runs from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and is open to the public. The Lawyer Assistance Committee and Sports Committee sponsor the event. Katie Mibaum, team leader at the New York Council on Problem Gambling, will lead the discussion.

She will explain the operational differences between mobile sportsbooks and prediction markets.

The program covers responsible gambling concerns arising from increased accessibility. Participants will review common warning signs, risk factors, and the potential impact of gambling disorders on personal and professional life. The session concludes with information on treatment options and support services.

The webinar coincides with the continued expansion of online wagering in the state. New York legalized mobile betting in 2022. Since that time, players have wagered nearly $58bn through online sportsbooks, based on data from the New York State Gaming Commission.
