Indiana has officially prohibited online sweepstakes casinos operating under dual-currency systems, with the new legislation taking effect on July 1. Governor Mike Braun signed House Bill 1052 into law, establishing strict regulations for gambling operators within the state.
Legislative Process and Penalties
The legislation was co-sponsored by Rep. Ethan Manning, Rep. Peggy Mayfield, and Rep. Justin Moed. Under the new rules, operators violating the ban face a civil penalty of up to $100,000. The bill successfully passed the House in early proceedings and received Senate approval in February before reaching the governor's desk.
Regional Developments
Other regions have recently adjusted their stance on similar gambling models. In May, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed Senate Bill 2136, while Oklahoma banned online sweepstakes after the Legislature overrode Governor Kevin Stitt’s veto of Senate Bill 1589. Conversely, the Chicago City Council voted 33-15 to reject a proposal that would have banned sweepstakes machines in the city.
